I made my ironing mat to fit the whole bottom of my bag first:

Full length ironing mat, which I secure to the bottom with press studs ( poppers).

As I couldn’t get the bag through my sewing machine, I hand sewed the sides to the front and back with hand sewn back stitch. I then hand sewed the bias binding trim on all the outside, again with teeny tiny stitches.
